RENT in Concert: A Tribute to Jonathan Larson
After the final dress rehearsal of RENT in January 1996, creator Jonathan Larson tragically passed away. Despite the immense loss, the cast, crew, and Larson's parents resolved that the show must continue. Initially planning to perform a subdued concert to honor his memory, the cast found themselves unable to remain still, ultimately bringing the audience to their feet during "La Vie Boheme." The concert, featuring an all-star cast and a lush 61-piece orchestra, took place at the Kennedy Center, blending the raw essence of the original production with a grand orchestral arrangement. While some songs were enhanced by the orchestration, others felt overwhelmed, showcasing a mix of strengths and weaknesses in sound design. The cast, composed of talented performers, delivered commendable performances despite the challenges of limited rehearsal time. Though not a fully staged version, RENT in Concert celebrated Larson's vision and the show's enduring impact, reminding audiences of its iconic status. As the audience reflected in silence post-performance, it became clear that Larson's legacy endures, and the tribute resonated deeply with all who attended.
